Indian Sports Awards 2012

The President,  Pranab Mukherjee gave away National Sports and Adventure Awards at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan 29 August 2012. The function was attended by Union Minister for Tourism  Subhod Kant Sahai , Ajay Maken, Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs & Sports and several eminent sports persons.
Vijay Kumar and  Yogeshwar Dutt were awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for this year for their sterling performance in Shooting and Wrestling events at the recently concluded London Olympics. The award carries a statuettes, citations and cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh each.
The President also gave away Dronacharya Awards for the this year to the following eight Sports persons in recognition of their meritorious achievements in the field of coaching. The award carries a statuettes, citations and enhanced cash prize of Rs 5 lakh each.

Foreign direct investment FDI from Pakistan

In an effort to enhance economic engagement and boost bilateral trade, India decides in principle to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) from Pakistan. Both the countries also agree to allow opening of bank branches in each other’s territory.

Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education

The Supreme Court upholds by a majority verdict the constitutional validity of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.


Political solution to the Kashmir problem

The Group of Interlocutors appointed by the Centre to find a political solution to the Kashmir problem recommends a “case-by-case review of all Central laws and Articles of the Indian Constitution extended to the State” since 1952. The report rules out a “simple return to pre-1953 situation”.

4G mobile services

India’s first-ever 4G mobile services are launched by Bharti Airtel in Kolkata. Compared to 3G that allows download speed of up to 21 mbps, 4G allows speed of up to 100 mbps, which is almost five times higher than 3G.
India Industrial Growth

Reports released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) show that India’s industrial growth surged to 6.8 percent in January 2012, rebounding strongly from a tepid 2.8 percent expansion posted a month earlier, i.e. in December 2011.
UGC reveals new plan to increase GER

CURRENT AFFAIRS: Filmfare Awards: Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan named best actors



The annual 57th Filmfare awards held in Mumbai.Vidya Balan taking away the Best Actress award for her performance in The Dirty Picture, while Ranbir Kapoor bagged the Best Actor award for Rockstar.
 

The trophy for the Best Film was given to Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. A.R. Rahman was named the Best Music Director for Rockstar.

Bollywood A-listers including Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza performed at the award function.

The red carpet rolled out for stars and celebrities as they walk down to celebrate the greatest and the best of Hindi cinema.

The award function saw Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor for the first time hosting the show together.
