UPSC preliminary MCQ'S 2019 Part 16

Which of the following are the affects of 'Solar Storms' on earth?
1. Generation of the Northern Lights.
2. It can affect compass readings.
3. It can affect airlines.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
a) 1 and 3 only
b) 2 and 3 only
c) 1 and 2 only
d) 1, 2 and 3
Correct Answer: D
Explanation
What is a solar Storm?
It is an eruption of mass and energy from the solar surface mainly in the form of magnetic
plasma and hot gases of electrically charged particles; and in addition, more dangerous gamma,
ultraviolet and X rays, out into space.
Solar Flaries, Cronal Mass ejection, and sunspot activities are the indicators of solar storm.
Solar storms can happen at any time but tend to become more severe and more frequent in
roughly 11-year cycles.
How does Solar Storm affect the Earth?
The collision of charged particles of solar storm with earth’s magnetospheres generates the
shimmering Northern Lights, the aurora borealis, and aurora australis in southern hemisphere.
Some charged particles can modify the Earth's magnetic field and affect compass readings.
The changing magnetic fields can also induce electricity in long pipelines, or produce electrical
surges in our power grids leading to brown outs and black outs.

Consider the following regarding the recently tested 'Ashwin' missile:
1. It is an interceptor missile.
2. It travels at Supersonic speed.
3. It is solid rocket propelled.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1, 2 and 3
b) 1 and 3 only
c) 3 only
d) 1 only
Correct Answer: A
Explanation
*DRDO has come up with a new indigenously produced Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor
missile, Ashwin.
*The missile was tested on the newly named Abdul Kalam Island located in the Balashore
district off the Odisha coast.
*The test involved the launch of the single-stage Ashvin Advanced Defense interceptor missile
from a mobile launcher and the successful destruction of an incoming target.
Salient Features
*7.5-metre-long, single stage solid rocket propelled, guided, supersonic missile.
*It is capable of destroying any incoming hostile ballistic missile.
TIKDAM: Statement 2: Supersonic speed means speed greater than sound. And we all know
that even a jet plane travels with the speed of sound. So, it is a simple fact that missiles travel
with greater speed than aircrafts. Therefore, we can easily guess, option (a) is correct, which is
the only option with statement 2.

Which of the following India missile/missiles is/are correctly matched with their respective description?
PRITHVI: Short range surface to surface ballistic missile
NAG: Short Range low level surface to air missile

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
a) 1 and 2 only
b) 1 only
c) 2 and 3 only
d) 1, 2 and 3
Correct Answer: B
Explanation
Short range surface to surface ballistic missile - PRITHVI
Intermediate range surface to surface ballistic missile - AGNI
Short Range low level surface to air missile - TRISHUL
Medium range surface to air missile - AKASH
Third generation anti tank missile – NAG
