2. India exports a major chunk of the milk it produces to international destinations.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 Only
b) 2 Only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 Nor 2
Correct Answer: D
Explanation
The Indian dairy sector provides livelihood to 15 crore farmers. India is the world’s largest (NOT the second largest) milk producer with 156 MMT of the item produced annually. However, exports of these items from India are negligible (about 0.5 MMT or 0.3% of the production).
While New Zealand controls 25% of the global dairy trade and Australia around 5%. Most RCEP countries have a highly restrictive regime on dairy products — eitherhigh import duties or
cumbersome procedures with certification and inspection requirements. For eg China does not allow Indian dairy imports. Similarly, Indonesia, Australia classifies India as an FMD (foot and
mouth disease)-hit nation and restricts Indian dairy imports. New Zealand’s requirement of several veterinary documentation on dairy products also prevents Indian exports to that nation.
