India’s first e-court opened at Hyderabad High Court

India’s first e-court (paperless court) was opened at High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad which is the common high court for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. 

It was inaugurated by Supreme Court judge Justice Madan B. Lokur who heads the e-Committee of the Supreme Court. Key Features The purpose of e-court is to ensure speedy justice for the litigants.

The e-Courts will ensure easy and better access to justice for public. It will also provide solution for large number of pending cases in the country. 

It will also make the work of judges, advocates and all those related with judiciary a lot more effective Besides, SC judge also announced that India’s first Integrated Criminal Justice System (ICJS) will be also launched in High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad. 


The system will integrate the courts, police stations, prosecution, forensic science laboratories and jails

7 Indian companies on 2016 Fortune 500 list

Seven Indian companies have made it to the latest Fortune 500 list of the world’s biggest corporations in terms of revenue. Fortune 500 list is an annual ranking of the world’s wealthiest companies, compiled and published by the American business magazine Fortune and published globally by Time Inc. In it companies are ranked by total revenues for their respective fiscal year which has ended on or before March 31, 2015. Revenue figures of companies mainly include their consolidated subsidiaries, reported revenues from the discontinued operations and excluding excise taxes.

  • 7 Indian companies are:Indian Oil Corporation (161st), Reliance Industries (215th), Tata Motors (226th), State Bank of India (232nd), Bharat Petroleum (358th), Hindustan Petroleum (367th) and Rajesh Exports (423rd).

PM Narendra Modi lays foundation stone of AIIMS and fertiliser plant in Gorakhpur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and revival of fertilizer factory plant in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

 The fertilizer factory plant belongs to the Fertiliser Corporation India Ltd (FCIL) and was lying idle since 1990s. It would be revived through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) of public sector units (PSUs) at an estimated cost of 6,000 crore Rupees.

NTPC, Coal India Limited (CIL) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) have formed a joint venture in this regard. The plant is expected to offer 3,000-4,000 jobs to skilled workforce in the state and will also ensure easy availability of urea to farmers.


AIIMS

  • The establishment of new AIIMS in Gaurakhpur will serve the dual purpose of providing super-specialty health care to the population.
  • Besides, it will also create a large pool of doctors and health workers that can be available for primary and secondary level facilities being created under National Health Mission (NHM).
  • The hospital at AIIMS will have a capacity of 750 beds and will also include emergency or trauma and AYUSH sections.
  • The AIIMS will be set up under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) which aims at correcting the regional imbalances in availability of affordable and reliable tertiary level healthcare in the country.
  • PMSSY also seeks to augment facilities for quality medical education in backward states.

FSSAI inks MoU with ASCI to check misleading advertisements in food and beverages sector

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has inked a MoU with Advertising Standard Council of India (ASCI) to check misleading advertisements in the food and beverages sector.

 This partnership between FSSAI and ASCI will put in place a mechanism to monitor misleading advertisements. It will also lead to streamlining advertisements effectively through structured guidelines and appropriate action.


Key Facts 
As part of the MoU, ASCI will comprehensively monitor these advertisements across various media. 
FSSAI has given a suo motu monitoring mandate to ASCI to process complaints against misleading advertisements of food and beverages.
 ASCI will report to FSSAI, the non- compliance of its decisions for further action as required per provisions of the FSS Act.
 FSSAI will also redirect complaints against misleading food and beverages advertisements to ASCI, which will be reviewed using ASCI’s code and guidelines. 
The review will include violation of the FSS Act and regulations related to advertisements making unsubstantiated, misleading or false claims.

President Pranab Mukherjee presents BC Roy National Awards for 2008, 2009 & 2010

President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday presented the Dr BC Roy national awards for 2008, 2009 and 2010 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

These awards were presented on the occasion of National Doctors’ Day observed on July 1 to pay honour and tribute to India’s most famous physician Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.

The awardees are 

2010: Nikhil C. Munshi, O.P. Kalra, Tejinder Singh, Subash Gupta, Amrinder Jit Kanwar, Rajendra Prasad and Glory Alexander.

RIL, SBI ink Subscription and Shareholders’ Agreement for payments bank JV

Telecom-to-energy conglomerate Reliance Industries (RIL) and India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) have signed Subscription and Shareholders’ Agreement to set up payments bank. 


As per the agreement, RIL will be the promoter with a 70 per cent equity contribution in the payments bank and SBI as joint venture will have 30 per cent equity contribution.


Background

  • RIL-SBI combine was among the 11 entities that were in August 2015 were given licence by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to start a payments bank.
  •  So far two of these – Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co and Sun Pharma, IDFC Bank and telecom operator Telenor have decided to shelve plans of launching payments bank. 


About Payments banks 

  • Payments banks are small deposit-taking institutions that can accept deposits (initially up to 1 lakh rupees per individual). 
  • Besides, they will offer Internet banking, facilitate money transfers and sell insurance and mutual funds by piggy-backing on existing retail or other networks. 
  • They can also issue ATM/debit cards, but not credit cards. However, they are also not allowed to lend. Instead, they can invest 75% of their deposits in short-term government bonds.

GK Concepts


Anil Kumble, former Indian captain and leg-spinner, has been appointed as the new coach of the Indian Cricket Team for one-year tenure. His tenure will begin from the upcoming West Indies’s tour which starts on July 9, 2016. With this, Kumble has become the first Indian to be appointed as the head coach of the national team since Kapil Dev in 1999-2000.



Boxing 

The Asian Games champion Vikas Krishan (75kg) and Commonwealth Games gold-medalist Manoj Kumar (64kg) has recently booked their berth for 2016 Rio Olympic after advancing to the semifinals of the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) World Qualifying Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. Apart from them, Shiva Thapa (56 kg) has already booked his ticket to Rio Olympics 2016 during the Asian Qualifiers in March 2016 and is the Indian boxer to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.




The International Olympic Day is observed every year on June 23 to promote participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.




The Vice President of India M Hamid Ansari has inaugurated “The International Conference on Social Statistics in India” in Patna, Bihar. The conference has been organised by Asian Development Research of India.

India and Switzerland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish formal cooperation in the fields of skill development and vocational and professional education and training. The MoU was signed in Winterthur city in Zurich between State Secretary Mauro Dell’ Ambrogio and Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy.




Hydrography – the key to well-managed seas and waterways The World Hydrography Day is observed every year on June 21 to create awareness about hydrography which is an essential science before undertaking any activity on or under the sea. The 2016 theme is “Hydrography – the key to well-managed seas and waterways”.




Ken Miyauchi has been appointed as the new President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group. He succeeded Nikesh Arora.




Mahasthangarh, the 3rd century BC archaeological site in Bogra, Bangladesh, has been declared as the SARRC cultural capital for 2016-17. The historic place will host festivals on literature, films, foods and dances from October 2016 to September 2017. Every year, an archeologically and culturally rich city of one of the 8- South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries is declared the cultural capital for that year to create a bridge among the people of those countries. Bamiyan, a historic city of Afghanistan, is the current SAARC cultural capital for 2015-16. 




March 2017 
The Union Government has extended the timeline for states to join Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme by a year to March 2017. The move would help states which could not enroll in or operationalise the scheme due to various reasons such as elections and regulatory approvals. Earlier, states were required to join the scheme last fiscal and issue bonds to pay off discoms’ 50 % debt in 2015-16. The main purpose of UDAY scheme is to get these discoms out of the vicious circle of debt and enable them to purchase power to increase consumption in the country.

  • Leicester City football club has won the 2016 English Premier League (EPL) title . With this win, Leicester City has become the champions for the first time in their 132-year history. The Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year 2016 has been awarded to Jamie Vardy, footballer of Leicester City.
  • The book “Politics of the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations” has been authored by Yeshi Choedon. This book investigate deep into military personnel and financial management by the United Nations in its peacekeeping efforts around the world, which the author claims to be the most important and evident method to control conflicts around the world.
  • The United Nations’World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on May 3 to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press. The 2016 Theme is “Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms – This Is Your Right!”. On this day, the 2016 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize has been honoured to Khadija Ismayilova, an investigative journalist from Azerbaijan, in Helsinki, Finland.
  • Nico Rosberg, a German Formula One driver for Mercedes Formula One team, has won the 2016 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix in Sochi, Russia.
