Supreme Court directs Central Govt. to hold a Single Common Entrance Test (CET) for all Medical Courses

The Supreme Court today directed the Central Government to hold a single eligibility- cum-entrance examination for MBBS and post-graduate medical courses in the country from this academic session.




A Bench of justices, Mr R.V. Raveendran, and Mr A.K. Patnaik, passed the order, saying that it will also be applicable for private medical colleges in the country.



The Bench asked the Government to hold the single common entrance test on a plea by Medical Council of India seeking to start a single eligibility-cum-entrance examination for MBBS and post-graduate Courses

Earlier, a panel set up by the health ministry to run the Medical Council of India ( MCI) had suggested that a common entrance exam would lessen the stress of the student.

AICTE not to approve more part-time MBA courses due to misuse by Institutes

A senior AICTE official said, there are many B-schools around which are misusing the facility and running other programmes on the pretext of a part-time MBA programme.


They are not working within the regulated framework, which prompted us to take this step.The experts said this change could affect around 400 colleges and 20,000 students. These figures could not be verified with AICTE. Several calls to AICTE Chairman S S Mantha went unanswered. There are around 2,500 AICTE-approved management schools.

The B-schools concerned are unhappy. “Experienced people learn management much better than freshers. We have around 240 students for masters’ courses in management, finance, human resource and information management. We have already requested the vice-chancellor of the University of Mumbai to take up the matter with AICTE,” said Suresh Ghai, director, K J Somaiya Institute of Management and Research.

The three B-school’s directors said by this the higher education would be more costly than before and prevent growth and development of many working professionals.

UGC NET E-certificate within 6 days from the Result Date


Students clearing the National eligibility test (UGC-NET) will now receive an e-certificate in just six days. Presently, it takes at least six to eight months for the University Grants Commission (UGC) to issue the certificate from the day the results are declared, reports the Times of India.The e-certificate will not just reach the candidate in six days, but it can be verified with the UGC in just 24 hours. As of now, the verification process requires at least four months.


The NET, besides the state eligibility test (SET), is the qualifying exam for appointment as assistant professor at universities and colleges recognised by the UGC. Also, it is the qualifying exam for UGC’s junior research fellowship (JRF) scheme.

The UGC guidelines for 2009 have made the qualification mandatory for teachers. Both, the central and the state governments, have put a special emphasis on getting all the existing teachers at universities and affiliated colleges clear either of the two qualifying exams. Maharashtra has, in fact, given a deadline up to December 2011 for teachers to clear either NET or SET.

The UGC conducts the NET twice a year in June and December in 77 subjects at 74 centres across the country. The University of Pune is one of the nodal agencies for the conduct of NET/SET. While the examination for the award of JRF is being conducted since 1984, the NET is being conducted since 1989. The number of fellowships under the NET scheme has been increased from 2,000 to 6,400 per annum since 2010. In June, 2010, 10,433 candidates successfully cleared the NET for assistant professorship, including JRF.

The e-certificate initiative was launched recently by Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Kapil Sibal in New Delhi. He also released a compendium of the UGC schemes on the occasion.

The process of issuing the UGC-NET qualification certificate to successful candidates normally takes around six to eight months, which is a cause of concern for both the UGC as well as the students. The UGC also keeps receiving requests at regular intervals from various institutions seeking verification of NET certificates that are presented by candidates seeking admission to Ph.D courses or appointment at a college or university. As of now, such verification takes four months.
